A FEW THINGS YOU MIGHT WONDER

Before you begin.

Is this a mental health diagnosis?

No. Closer is an original self-reflection questionnaire, not a clinically validated assessment. It cannot diagnose a condition or determine your wellbeing. Your score is a starting point for reflection, and you can seek support at any score.

Who can see my answers?

Your answers are held only in this page’s memory. They are not sent to a server, saved in browser storage, or added to the URL. Reloading or closing the page clears them. If you download your reflection, that file will be saved on your device.

What if I’m happy spending time alone?

Time alone can be enjoyable and restorative. These questions focus on whether you have the connection you want, rather than how many people you know or how often you go out.

How is my score calculated?

Each answer contributes 0–3 points. Questions about feeling connected are scored in reverse. Your total is converted to a 0–100 score; higher means more unmet connection in your answers. The descriptive score ranges are not clinical cutoffs.

A LITTLE TRANSPARENCY

About your check-in.

Closer is an original 20-question reflection on the connection you have wanted and experienced over the past two weeks. It is not a validated loneliness scale, a mental health diagnosis, or a substitute for professional care.

What the score means

Each answer contributes 0–3 points. Positive statements about connection are reverse-scored, so higher totals always mean more unmet connection. Every question has equal weight.

Score = round(total points ÷ 60 × 100)

The four themes each contain five questions and use the same calculation with a maximum of 15 points. They help organize your reflection; they are not validated subscales.

These ranges are descriptive design choices, not clinical cutoffs. A score is not a percentage chance of being lonely, a comparison with other people, or a measure of your worth. Your own experience matters more than the number.

A little background

Loneliness is about a gap between the connection you want and the connection you experience. It can happen even around other people. Read about social connection at the WHO ↗

JUST FOR YOU

Your answers stay here.

This check-in runs in your browser. Your answers and score are held only in the page’s memory, and are never sent to a server or saved in cookies or browser storage.

Reloading or closing this page clears your answers. Going back to the home screen keeps them available while this page stays open. Starting again clears your previous answers.

There are no accounts, analytics, trackers, third-party fonts, or external requests made by the questionnaire. The web server may still log ordinary page requests. External resources open only when you choose to follow a link, and their own privacy policies apply.

If you choose “Save my reflection,” a text file containing your score and answers is downloaded to your device. Anyone who can access that file can read it.
